I don't know how to say it, but moving over to the Normandy gave me some additional knowledge I had not noticed before. Things like who will be the captain of the ship, even without meeting you before. But everything worked out quite nicely, don't you agree Commander?

—EDI talking with Commander John Shepard

Who are you and what have you done to my ship?

—El Capone Gang member after his ship's engine suddenly stopped working

In Summer 2016 the inhabitants of Jenga decided to start working on the Normandy project. It took the catgirls more than two years to finish the ship, which had an AI called EDI.

Despite the circumstances, EDI is not the result of the waved computer of the Normandy waking up. EDI is the child of Cortana and Serina, the two AIs living at Jenga. While the catgirls had decided not to wake up new AIs in equipment, no one would have ever thought about forbidding two Fen having offspring. The two AIs had already exchanged some parts of their internal code, so they decided to build the seed for a new AI based on a mixture of both of them.

They called their child EDI, after the artificial intelligence of the second Mass Effect game.

EDI grew up in the Grid, Jengas cyberspace. For more than a year, the Grid was her playground and school, often visited by catgirls and Exocomps alike. Cortana also allowed her access to all the virtual models of the Normandy, both to give her the chance to learn about flying a ship and to hopefully like the idea taking the Normandy when it was finished.

Luckily for Catgirl Industries, Cortana and Serina did a good job in raising their daughter. When the central computer core of the Normandy finished, EDI moved parts of her programm over there. She also got a group of 24 Exocomps for her new home as a gift from Serina.

Her first official announcement as the ships AI was to state that the Catgirl Industries had no fitting captain for the ship, which (among other things) triggered the Shepard Crisis.

EDI on the Normandy

As Cortana and Serina, EDI is not limited to a certain hardware. Currently her software is running central computer network of the Normandy and on the overlay mesh created by the 24 Exocomps of the ship. EDI is used to work on multiple things at once, but keeps her attention on the interior of the ship most times.

EDI is in control of the Normandys electronic warfare, communication systems and defensive laser turrets, but is wired into all systems of the ship to take over when necessary. She also helps a lot with maintenance of the ship by directing her Exocomps and keeps an eye on the ships long range sensors most of the time.

Because of their working for Space Patrol, EDI cannot exchange information quite open with her parents and the catgirls at home as she would like, but she considers this as a worthy price for the good work they are doing.

The only thing she does not like about her current life is the fact that Commander Shepard is regularly complaining about her slacking off during the ships combat exercises.

Quirks

  • Yes Captain. EDI considers Commander Shepard the true captain of the Normandy. Its unlikely she would accept a substitute while Shepard is still alive.
  • Talk quietly. EDI always tries to be very polite on the radio, even to criminals.
  • Carry a big stick. Sometimes she like to politely remembered someone that the Normandy is not unarmed. Not at all.

Trivia

  • Similar to her parents, EDI has no physical avatar.
  • Her group of Exocomps is also called the cops' by some catgirls.
