Shinji Ikari awakened on 77 Frigga, having been built by Jet Jaguar as practice for repairing Anika Daini in an emergency. Jet had originally intended to dismantle the unawakened body, however Anika convinced her to give it the chance at life. The final skin-layer was applied through the use of special remotes to prevent accidental contamination from other wave sources. [1].
Shinji Ikari awoke alone in Kotono Ito's apartment, where he had been given a private room to keep him from panicking on wake-up. When he awoke, he didn't initially realise he was an Artifical Intelligence [2]. Unsure how to handle him, his builders quietly asked for help from Fenspace. It didn't take long for Fenspace at large to figure out where the call had come from. Gina Langley, Benjamin Rhodes, Rei Ayanami, Chris Marsden and Yayoi Fujisawa rushed to help.
Exactly what happened when they arrived has been kept private, however, video footage of a chaotic pick-up game of Astroball featuring choppers originally built for the failed Frigga Defence Force has appeared online.
Shinji was given a final system's checkup by A.C. Peters, confirming he was healthy and stable, before correcting an overheating issue.[3]
A short time after R. Shinji Ikari he made his way to Stellvia to take up a position as a short-order cook. Here Yuu and Shinji met. It was "like at first sight" - while neither of them has ever displayed any overt affection for the other, it wasn't long before they were almost always seen in each other's company.[4] When station Ultima was completed, Miyuri Akisato took Yuu along to run the station's hotel, and Yuu took Shinji along to serve as the station's security chief. They continue to spend time with each other as "just friends," and have built a daughter, Nana.[5]

Appearance and Personality
Shinji is short, with cobalt blue eyes and a very boyish body. He appears to be somewhere between 14 and 17. When not on duty, he likes to dress quite plainly. He doesn't openly advertise who he is and tries not to get too involved in the Eva fandom.
Emotionally, he still bears the scars of Neon Genesis Evangelion, and has been receiving therapy from Kat Avins for at least a year. He has been getting better, and has already begun to grow beyond his basic template. He surprised everyone on Frigga when they discovered he was a natural Gearhead. Shinji owns an MZ-23 'Judy' - the first prototype with Tanalloy batteries. He named it 'Misato Katsuragi' [6]. He likes to go fast. Shinji enjoys classical music, not just cello pieces, and is a competent cook.
First and formost however, Shinji is a decent person, holding a quiet, unremarkable courage inside.
Mundane Attributes
I'm not just a 2 Dimensional Character. Based on a well known fictional character, which allows people to predict his reactions with a certain degree of accuraccy. Shinj's voice is similar to that of Spike Spencer. The differences however, are notable enough to give some people pause.
A little more nutmeg.: Competent cook.
Nobody told me to stop...: Cellist, capable of tackling most pieces with a reasonable degree of skill. Being an android helps.
Handwavium Abilities
Boom - Boomer: Has the typical android bonuses. Potentially immortal with proper care and maintenance. His exact hardware capabilities aren't known [7], but appear to be roughly average so far.
Synchronisation at 40%: Shinji has a wirless wristband gifted to him by Anika Daini. It allows him to use the internet and radio telepathy, and to interface with hardware specifically designed to be compatible with his hardware.
Quirks
Our differences are skin-deep. Built to the exact same design specifications as Anika Daini. Capable of sharing parts up to and including major body components. Referred to as Flint-Type android in Cyber Confederation specifications, after the original designer, William Flint.
I'm a real boy: Pinocchio Glitch.
Approximately 3.141592653589793: Prone to pipelining the output from certain calculations straight to his mouth.
Is it hot in here?: Needs to breath to cool his processors down. In vacuum, he'll overheat in minutes. Shinji will now only shut down under extreme thermal load - past the point where a human would faint due to heatstroke.
DEXRON, the real thing: Requires GM-specification DEXRON VI Automatic Transmission Fluid to transmit mechanical power to his systems, and act as a coolant. It is possible for Shinji to bleed to death.
