The richest, densest mass of humanity outside of Earth, Port Phobos takes up most of the Martian moon Phobos and is still growing. Port Phobos began as a freight way-station for material headed to Helium and Port Lowell to feed the rapacious maws of the Mars Terraforming Project, Utopia Planitia and other local projects.

This rapid growth has turned Port Phobos into a free-floating version of Manhattan, with almost as high a population density. The internal habitat is slowly hollowing out the entire moon, using the mined material to build ever more elaborate networks of docks and skyscrapers on the outer surface.

History

Founded in 2008 for the simple reason that the top of a gravity well was a more convenient place for larger ships to land, Port Phobos was initially a small collection of 'waved pressurized tents, cargo storage and flat space for landing Fencraft.

As more and more Fen moved to Mars and started increasingly ambitious projects, Port Phobos grew to match.

Places in Port Phobos

  • The Port Phobos STC Tower[1] is one of the tallest buildings in Port Phobos. Studded with radar and more unconventional sensors, it is home to the busiest traffic controllers in Fenspace.
  • Raven's Garage is a small but well-trafficked garage and machine shop catering to the Gearheads.
  • Callahan's is a good place to get a drink, and to hear a tall tale about just about anything. Those who have low tolerance for puns be ye warned.
  • The main administrative offices of the Artemis Foundation are located in Port Phobos. As is befitting a space-exploration organization, these offices are on the surface, not in the underground warrens.
  • The Counter Clock is a massive, old fashioned clock located above the main promenade. Visible from many places in the Port, it provides mostly accurate (if mirror-reversed) time to those who care to look.

Stories

Port Phobos is the setting for these stories:

Notes

  1. The debate over whether STC or ATC should be used is long-running, heated, and mostly irrelevant... unless you hear someone get it "wrong".
