2709 Sagan is a small Main Belt asteroid, which was discovered by Edward L. G. Bowell in 1982. It is named after the late astronomer Carl Sagan. Sagan is an S-type asteroid (meaning that it is stony in composition) in the Flora family (a large grouping of S-type asteroids in the inner Main Belt, believed to have once been part of 8 Flora).

The Handwavium Propulsion Laboratory (Artemis Foundation's main research base) and shipyard Ley (Artemis' main shipbuilding facility) share space on 2709 Sagan. Satellite campuses belonging to Harvard, the California Institute of Technology, Oxford, and Queens (Kingston, Canada) are also found here; they all specialize in astrophysics studies. The remainder of the asteroid's surface is covered with residential and agricultural-use domes.

The entire surface is treated politically as a single settlement, named Sagan Town in the articles of incorporation. Town Hall, home to the administrative and political facilities of 2709 Sagan, is located near the Handwavium Propulsion Laboratory and the Caltech and Queens campuses.
