Gravity drives are where 'wavetech takes a hard left away from hardtech and keeps on going. There are a large number of different gravity based drives, but as their name indicates they all work from one basic principle: They modify or make use of gravity to propel the ship they're part of.
Given hardtech's current inability to easily affect gravity by means other than shifting masses around, and large masses if they want human noticeable changes, the method by which handwavium devices can affect, generate or cancel gravity fields is even more poorly understood than a great deal of 'wavetech. There seem to be several different ways that it is done, often corresponding to the methods described in the works of fiction favored by the the people who 'waved up the drive.
Gravity drives in general appear to be related to the artificial gravity technology many, many, Fen craft use. This surprises no-one. What does surprise people is that there are no mentions of gravity drives (either examples or theory) in the Whole Fenspace Catalog.[1]
Some kinds of gravity drives:
- The Gravity propeller
- Dillon-Wagoner Graviton Polarity Generator aka Spindizzy drives.
- Stonewell-Bellcom-Weber Gravitic Impeller - used heavily by Rockhounds and associated companies.
- Mass Effect field drives developed and used by Catgirl Industries
Notes
- ↑ Especially since the Catalog should, at minimum, list the Anson GravMaster antigravity device.
